the Uncertain Solicitor
Who is this program for? You’re on a career conveyor belt. You may have got on the belt by accident. At the moment you don’t know whether to stay on the belt and speed up, or slow down the belt to take stock, or just get off altogether. You want to explore whether being a solicitor is what you still want to do and what it means long term, including in terms of your wellbeing generally and your ability to have a life outside work. You want to see if you’re on track and whether private practice, in-house, a PSL role or something else (and if so what) suits you best. You’re testing your career plan.
How does the Uncertain Solicitor program benefit you? There are 7 stages: (i) we work out what you like (or not) about being a solicitor; (ii) we work out what you’re good at (or not) as a solicitor; (iii) we imagine and develop the components of your perfect job as a solicitor; (iv) we consider how your accumulated experience and skills (in work and life) sit comfortably with what you do now and your perfect job as a solicitor; (v) we assess the extent to which you are using (or ignoring) your accumulated experience and skills to see how on track you are (or not) to be a good and happy solicitor; (vi) if you’re on track we move on to the Rising Star program; but (vi) if you’re not on track we work out how to get you off the conveyor belt quickly (but sensibly) and focus on something that will suit you better.
Rising
Star
the Rising Star
Who is this program for? You love your job. You’re working towards the next stages in your legal career as an Associate, Manager, Director, Member, Partner or Business Owner. Your progress is encouraged and supported by your firm or employer. But you recognise the need to be skilled at, and want to know more about (and have a plan for) building your own practice, client development, getting noticed, developing a network, personal branding and navigating the politics of promotion in a partnership. You’re a rising star.
How does the Rising Star program benefit you? There are 6 stages: (i) we do a big-picture Imagining My Future Legal Career exercise; (ii) we identify the skills and competencies you have or need to achieve your short- and longer-term career goals; (iii) we identify the people you already know or need to know who can cajole, develop, feedback, mentor, introduce, stretch, support or train you; (iv) we work out if you can stay where you are or need to move on to progress your career; (v) we create a short- and longer-term implementation plan; and (vi) you carry out, monitor and adjust your plan with my support.
Consciously managing your own legal career in this way gives you a much greater chance that you will be and continue to be a rising star, but on your terms.
v2.0
Solicitor
the v2.0 Solicitor
Who is this program for? You’re established in your legal career, but are asking “What Next?”. You’re wondering whether being a solicitor is what you still want. You’re wondering whether (and if so how) you can use your legal skills set in a different way (now or later). You’re interested in using your expertise as a springboard to something more (as a NED? to give something back to society? to learn something new?). You’re reaching a personal or professional milestone and want to (or must) plan for a different future. You realise that you’re just genuinely more excited about something other than being a solicitor. You’re re-inventing yourself. You’re a v2.0 solicitor.
How does the v2.0 Solicitor program benefit you? There are 6 stages that resemble the Evolvers programs and are more long-term than the Rising Star program: (i) we do a big-picture Imagining My v2.0 Career exercise; (ii) we identify the skills and competencies you have or need to have to design and control your v2.0 career; (iii) we identify the people you already know or need to know who can cajole, develop, feedback, mentor, introduce, stretch, support or train you; (iv) we work out how long you can stay where you are and when you need to move on to be a v2.0 Solicitor; (v) we design a long-term implementation plan; and (vi) you carry out, monitor and adjust that plan with my support.
Consciously anticipating your own later career choices gives you a much greater chance that you will be able to implement (rather than fall back on) a plan and be a v2.0 Solicitor on your terms.
